A night with Breakfast.

2026 Day 206. #PersonalDays.

Monsoon has arrived in all its glory. Rains everyday help beat the tropical heat of the Indian subcontinent. It is a time of enjoyment for many. Personally, I love the smell of wet soil after it rains. The sun tries to peek through the clouds, the wind is chilly, the weather is humid, and a short walk can be extremely enjoyable.

After one such short spell of rain, I expected a similar experience as I walked into my backyard. I was instead, pleasantly surprised by a little orange kitten possibly separated from its mother. We immediately took him in because he was wet and shivering and fed him a little.

I did not think too much about it. My family has been rather against pets so I thought he was going to get kicked out soon too. As night rolled around I was getting ready for bed. A little reading of Heavy Duty before bed and I saw the little kitten again. He came about quietly, but he was small and weak so had problems getting up on the bed. I picked him up and settled him next to me.

The monsoon was going to rage through the night. My body runs a little hot so I much prefer colder nights because I can sleep through things peacefully. The little kitty was coddled up next to me, possibly because of the heat, and quickly fell asleep.

I am used to animals being comfortable around me, dogs are rather energetic and enthusiastic while cats have always been more lazier around me. This was not unsual for me, but I decided to sleep early for the kitten.

I was careful not to move too much but the tiniest movement got him awake.

Then I moved to brush my teeth, change for bed, and set my alarms for tomorrow. The kitten seemed impatient as I got back, as if I was delaying his bed time and he could not sleep without me. Sensing the urgency of the situation I quickly settled into my bed.

The kitten perched itself right next to my ear. Stacked between the little crevice between my shoulder and the pillow he was purring, and shivering. Because he was so close to my ear, I could hear the little shivers he was going through.

So I moved him slightly, tucker him between my arm and chest where it would be warmer. He seemed to quiet down now and I was happy. I felt like a parent for a second and thought to myself that this was not too hard. You just had to keep your eyes and ears really open and play a little guessing game.

I drifted off to sleep extremely happy with myself.

Then the nightmare began.

The little kitty could immediately go to sleep, unlike me, who needs to shift around and move a little bit before I can pass out. Because she was sleeping in a position so close to me I tried to sleep very rigidly so as to not disturb her.

He however, did not share the same concern for me. He woke up multiple times through the night and followed a little routine involved of self-service, waking me up, and then going back to sleep.

As soon as he was awake, he would start looking for my hands, or rather fingertips. At first he would just lick them which is when I would be woken up, just so I could experience him trying to bite them with his new canines. It was more annoying than painful. I realised that this is a habit, and I need to force a little feedback so that she stops this. A light tap on the head would usually stop her from doing so.

Now that he realised that I was awake, she would want to play around. GIve the same treatment to my nose and my earlobes as she would my fingertips. The only solution seemed to be to hold her tightly, settle her down, where she could not move much and pretend to fall asleep.

I was woken up multiple times through the night. I was not particularly appreciative of this little nightly routine but I could not be upset at the little weirdo. This is also when I realised that parenting an actual human child is going to much harder than this, I do not think I would make for a good father with this in mind.

The night however, was rewarding in its own way. I gained the “joys” of being woken up by a child and having to continuously struggle to fall asleep.

At about six in the morning, a sudden bout of energy crept into her. He was more active than he had been through the night and I was more sleepier than ever. Quickly he realised that I possibly was not in the mood, so he simply lept off the bed, and walked off into the text room to bother my parents.

I had the greatest two hours of sleep in that little while. Usually I go for a run at six, but it has been consistently raining in the morning so I decided to work out in the afternoons instead.

I am not sure if I am looking forward to more nights with the little kitten, the days however are nicer.

I have decided to name the little kitten ‘Breakfast’. It is not a particularly nice name but it’s extremely joy inspiring to me, almost as much the kitty himself. He is a little orange weirdo but I enjoy having him around. This little pet has also helped regulate the mood of others in the household which is a big plus.

My family has never been big on pets but somehow this boywas accepted fairly quickly. Maybe it was his size and how we found him, or maybe because the house has not heard the cries of a child in a while. Either way, I see this as an absolute win for me and the family in general. Looking forward to more nights and days with the lovely Breakfast.

If you feel the name is rather weird, get your own pet and name them whatever you like.
